Chiropractic has been shown to be effective in treating Cervicogenic headaches. What does this mean? In a nutshell it means that these are headaches that are triggered by a problem with the vertebrae in the neck. There can be many causes of headaches such as eyestrain, high blood pressure or strokes to name but a few. Clearly it makes sense that these are causes that chiropractic is less likely to help with. However when caused by neck strain, whether as a result of physical or emotional stress, chiropractic care can be very beneficial.
If the vertebrae in your neck are restricted or misaligned they can interfere with the free flow of impulses through the nerves in your neck, or they could cause tension in the small muscles which support your head. This tension causes pain. These are just a couple of the ways that problems in your neck can lead to headaches.
A chiropractors approach is to use adjustments of the spine, light specific thrusts, to restore normal function to the joints of the neck. In this way Chiropractic is targeting the underlying cause of your problem and not just masking the symptoms!
