You can use ice therapy after an acute injuries, such as sprains, within 48 hours, to minimise swelling and the manifestation of pain or after activity that irritates a chronic injury, for instance shin splints. They’re very useful for bee stings and other inflammatory responses.

Never ice before activities and ice is most effective immediately following an injury. It aids the reduction of swelling. Remember not to over-ice, too much could cause tissue damage. The skin should be pale upon removal of the ice pack.

Apply ice for a maximum of 15 minutes at a time and keep the injured area elevated above your heart if possible. A shorter time is better for more superficial sprains e.g. elbow or wrist.Facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterestlinkedinmail
