What to expect
At your first visit, we will do everything we can to make you feel welcome and at home. Our aim is to eliminate any apprehension or anxiety you may be feeling when you come in, for the first time. We want you to be able to focus on getting better and this is more likely to happen when you feel you’re in the right place and will be well taken care of.
People often comment that Norwich Chiropractic has a calm and friendly atmosphere. They also often comment on how helpful and caring we are. This is great because we do care about every person we see and we want to do our very best for them.
When you come in, you will be greeted by one of our support team who will look after you during your visit. We’ll ask you to relax in reception, with a drink if you’d like one, and then complete some simple paperwork before you see Neil Folker (Doctor of Chiropractic). Fresh fruit, chilled water, fruit juice or hot herbal teas or fresh coffee are available for you to enjoy.
Then you’ll meet Neil, your chiropractor. Our purpose, on this first consultation, is to listen and then discuss with you your past medical history, your current level of health and what your health goals are. We will then conduct a thorough physical exam, including chiropractic, orthopaedic and neurological tests. We will also assess your posture, weight-bearing and ranges of motion. These tests give us important information about the function of your spine and nervous system. Ladies are supplied with gowns for comfort and privacy. Using state of the art equipment, we are able, where indicated, to carry out a computerised spinal scan that assesses your nervous system and muscles. If we need to take x-rays, which are only taken when clinically necessary, we will discuss this with you before going ahead.
When we have completed your exam, noted our findings and answered any questions you may have, we will discuss your options for care with you and ask you if you’d like to proceed. If so, we will arrange your next visit, in which we will discuss our findings with you, and also make an appointment for you to attend our weekly ‘Healthy for Life’ talk. Our patients appreciate that we explain everything in advance! The more you understand who we are, what we do and why we do it, the better.
Healthy for Life
To help you get the best results and achieve your health goals at Norwich Chiropractic, our Healthy for Life talk is designed to help you understand what we do and why we do it. We ask that you attend this complimentary group talk within the first two to three weeks, as experience has shown us that people who come, tend to get well quicker and stay well for longer.
It’s easy to take our health for granted and we often don’t appreciate that illness is a result of lifestyle choices we’ve made in the past. Our talk explains the true nature of health and where health really comes from. We’ll look at why our population’s health overall is deteriorating, with a increasing incidence of diseases that could be avoided given the right health choices. We also address why drugs and surgery are not always the answer. Our workshop, which lasts 30-40 minutes, may challenge the way you think about health as our aim is to empower you to take more control and make better healthcare choices. With a fuller understanding of how your body works and the importance of good spinal and nervous system function, you will learn how chiropractic can help you and your family to enjoy better health. Our talks are held on alternating Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7.15pm. We encourage you to bring along your spouse or partner, or any other family member, so they will understand how best to support you.
If you haven’t reserved your place, please give us a call on 01603 216430.
Second Visit – Your Report
At your second visit, Neil will have correlated your health history, exam findings, including scans and x-rays if taken. We’ll explain what we have found, our diagnosis and how we may be able to help you. You’ll receive a written copy of your Report and a copy of any scans that were done.
Together, we’ll discuss our findings in detail along with a proposed schedule of care, called your care plan. We’ll explain your problem to you, what needs to be done to correct it, how long it will take and the costs involved. If you’re happy to go ahead, we can make a start. We feel that it’s important to work in partnership to improve your health, so we encourage your questions and make sure you’re comfortable with everything before we go ahead with chiropractic care.
Your First Adjustment and Your Care Plan
Your second visit is when you can usually expect your first adjustment, the details of which will be explained to you as we go along. Your care plan will depend on various factors, such as the nature of your problem, your age, health history, your current physical condition and stress levels. Most care plans, which are individually tailored, require a number of visits and these are scheduled in advance after your first adjustment. We’ll also briefly go through how to get the most out of your care at our office.
At an appropriate point in your care plan, we will monitor your recovery with a Progress exam, repeating tests to show your progress objectively. If necessary, we will adjust your care plan and schedule where appropriate.
After investing time in your first two visits, your future visits will be shorter. A typical visit may need approximately just 5 to 10 minutes or so of your time but don’t make the mistake of thinking that the brevity of a regular visit lessens its value. Your regular adjustments need not take long and, with the groundwork well prepared, we can adjust you and let you get on with your day.
Like a regular workout at the gym, each visit builds on the ones before. Your individual care plan will require a certain number of adjustments within a certain period of time. This is required to produce spinal and postural correction and is designed to get results for you. Missed visits can interfere with the momentum necessary to make the needed changes and, therefore, will affect your progress overall. This is why we make your schedule in advance, so you can plan your diary ahead and make it easy to fit your visits into your busy life.
Our time is valuable, so we ask that if you do need to alter your appointment, to please give at least 24 hours notice (unless it is an emergency). Less than 24 hours notice may incur a fee.
We appreciate that your time too is valuable and we do everything possible to run on time and minimise the impact on your day’s activities. If we do need to keep you waiting because someone does need more time than usual, we would appreciate your understanding – see Our Promise, point 7.
We want you to enjoy your visits at Norwich Chiropractic and for you to be be assured that nothing is too much trouble; whether it’s a question you have, a drink you’d like, one of our interesting articles photocopied, or just a chat about your day, we’re here for you.
At an appropriate point in your care plan, we will monitor your recovery with a Progress exam. This visit gives us an opportunity to take stock of your progress to date. More time will be allotted to this visit, so we can repeat a number of the original tests carried out at your first visit and compare the findings. We’ll also ask for your feedback on how you feel you’re doing and answer any questions you may have at this time. This evaluation helps us to assess how well we’re helping you to achieve your health goals and may flag up particular areas to work on.
Depending on your progress and your needs, your plan may be amended to get the best results. We will offer you our best recommendations and advice and give you options for continuing your care, depending on your health goals.
Whether you’re looking for pain relief or postural and spinal correction to help improve spinal function, or maintenance to help prevent relapses or wellness to help you be the best you can be, it’s your choice. However long you decide to benefit from chiropractic care is up to you. We’re here to support you.
